The floating keyboard in Chrome OS will soon be resizable

Chrome OS is typically found on laptops that have physical keyboards. 2-in-1 Chromebooks with touchscreens haven’t been around super long, and there are even fewer that lack a keyboard completely. Chrome OS 70 introduced a floating virtual keyboard for these situations. One thing the floating keyboard lacks is the ability to be resized. That will be changing soon.

Google recently merged a new commit to the Chromium Gerrit that adds a new flag titled “Resizable Virtual Keyboard.” When enabled, you can drag the corners of the floating keyboard to resize it. The characters on the keyboard will scale to fill the space. The flag is available in Chrome OS 82 which is currently in Dev/Canary.

XDA Senior Member Some_Random_Username enabled the flag and shared the screenshots above. The first image shows the icon you press to switch to the floating keyboard. This is a handy feature that really should have been included with the floating keyboard from day one. If you want the flexibility of moving the keyboard around the screen, it only makes sense to be able to resize it. Keep an eye out for this to make its way to Chrome OS beta and stable channels in the future.
